A selection of work by Portland, Oregon-based artist Dan Gluibizzi centered around time, surveillance, and what he describes as “the feedback loops I inhabit as I click through the myriad digital landscapes that punctuate my daily life.”

Dan Gluibizzi's group portraits are often the expressions of two of the greatest themes in art- the nude body and the kiss. Flowers, one of art history's other most familiar themes, are somewhat present, too; Dan's colorful figurative arrangements can feel like human bouquets in various forms of spiraling and blossoming.

The work of Dan Gluibizzi refuses to be superficially defined by its subject matter, a trick that seems almost impossible to pull off given its overt nature. Instead, Gluibizzi leans into his preferred themes of sexuality, identity and human connection, giving his paintings a solid conceptual foundation that supports both their depth and complexity.

A nude figure rendered in an ochre ombré wash points skyward, while another depicted in lavender and pear-green rests their weight on their left hip, an undergarment suspended just below their knees. From a distance, Dan Gluibizzi’s watercolors depict colorful portraits against monochrome or soft, variegated grounds. Closer inspection, however, reveals that the figures are engaged in a tender exchange of banal, intimate, and sexually explicit gestures.

These were small but sick—I'm a sucker for colored plexiglass. The Portland-based artist was super playful in an accessible way. No cheap thrills here. I'm most used to seeing his work in two dimensional, watercolor form, but his style's translation to sculpture worked perfectly.

He is quite adept at contextual detachment, which he uses to set soft parameters for his subjects, coaxing different characters to mingle freely with each other in order to open the possibilities for alternative narratives.
