Mel Katz: On and Off the Wall
By Barry Johnson
The exhibition at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art is accompanied by a full-color monograph by Barry Johnson who has written extensively on the visual and performing arts in the Pacific Northwest and has served as the arts editor at both Willamette Week and The Oregonian, where he worked for twenty-six years. After leaving the newspaper business in 2009, he started the nonprofit Oregon ArtsWatch. In his essay, Johnson will discuss Katz’s career during the past 50 years and will place his work within the broader context of contemporary American art.
