Jo Hamilton, working in crochet, is known for her portraits of people from many walks of life. Her electric color palette in yarn is a perfect medium for the unique characters she captures. In “The Matriarchs, the Masked, and the Naked Man," the artist seeks to examine the ways in which people are evaluated according to appearance, gender, and age. This exhibition features portraits of both of Hamilton’s grandmothers. It also includes some of the vibrant elderly Portland women the artist has cared for towards the end of their lives. Having heard the stories of overcoming obstacles and prejudices before the advent of the women's movement, Jo Hamilton’s current portrait work celebrates age and wisdom.
