Press Release

A preeminent Portland painter, Henk Pander is well known for his unorthodox subject matter and large-scale landscapes. Growing up in Haarlem, The Netherlands, he received his technical training in Holland where he was influenced by the grandeur and historical aspects of European painting. With this background, he explores both current and historical events as his subjects.

This show, De Tand Des Tijds ~ The Tooth of Time presents a sweep of time from the 16th to 21st centuries, as well as imagined views of the future, creating compelling and thought provoking narratives. The show ranges from a portrait of Johannes Kepler and his astronomical discoveries to visions of a machine dominated futurescape, with poignant still lifes as counterpoint. A consummate draftsman, Pander uses plein air and studio still life as the basis for his physical and commanding work.

Henk Pander studied at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam before moving to Portland in the 1960s. In addition to painting throughout his career, he worked extensively in theatre set design beginning with the Storefront Theatre in the 1970s-80s and numerous projects for the Portland Center for Performing Arts, OR. His work is well collected privately in the Northwest and is represented in many public collections nationally and internationally including the City of Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Oregon Historical Society, Portland; Portland Art Museum, OR; University of Oregon Museum of Art, Eugene, OR; Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem, OR; Seattle Convention Center, WA; Boise Art Museum, ID; and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Washington, DC. He has an extensive exhibition history both nationally and abroad. In 2011-12, the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem, OR presented a major retrospective exhibition of his work. Exhibitions of his work have also been touring the U.S., in cities including Sarasota, FL; Joplin, MO; and Albany, Georgia.
