Press Release

Seattle artist Anne Siems paints ethereal figures in mythical places with careful detail and refinement. This exhibition is informed by a fascination with ceremonies that Siems has had since childhood, particularly from time spent living in South America. Entitled Ceremony, this show draws particularly on her recent personal immersion in spiritual ceremony, as well as a study of botanical decorations used in rituals in East Africa and pagan ceremonial dress from Southern and Eastern Europe. She notes that she “envisioned herself like an anthropologist, visiting the young women and children that populate my art." In keeping with her work of the past several years, she continues to explore ideas about life and death, sensuality, sexuality, nature, dreams, the psyche and the spirit. In addition to paintings on panel, this show will also include a selection of collaged works on paper.

Born in Germany, Anne Siems received her MFA in 1991 from Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin.  She has exhibited in the United States since the mid-1980s, at galleries in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Her work is in various public collections including the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock; Boise Art Museum, ID; Microsoft Collection, Redmond, WA; Tacoma Art Museum, WA; and University Hospital, University of Washington, Seattle.
